Document intelligence beyond OCR: what structure extraction actually requires

OCR gives you text. Document intelligence gives you meaning. The gap is enormous.\n\nA financial statement has numbers. Understanding which numbers are revenue, which are COGS, and which are footnotes requires understanding document structure: headers, tables, hierarchies, references.\n\nWhat we've built into Scribe:\n\n**Layout analysis first.** Before extracting any text, understand the visual structure: columns, tables, sidebars, footnotes. The layout tells you how to interpret the text.\n\n**Semantic typing.** Every extracted element gets a type: heading, body, table cell, footnote, caption. Type determines how the element should be processed.\n\n**Cross-reference resolution.** 'See Note 7' in a financial statement should resolve to the actual content of Note 7, not a literal string.\n\n**Confidence scoring.** Every extracted field gets a confidence score. Low-confidence fields get flagged for human review rather than silently passed through.
